About Dan

Dan Straily is a “right-handed” Major League Baseball pitcher for the Miami Marlins. Dan has distinguished himself in his baseball career for his consistency, durability and … strikeouts! Dan is partnering with the Blechman Foundation in this year’s “Strikeout PD!” Challenge to raise funds for and community awareness of PD research. Individuals and companies can pledge money for every strikeout by Dan in April, which is National Parkinson’s Awareness Month.

Dan is from Redlands, California. He played baseball in college initially at Western Oregon University, and then at Marshall University. In 2009, the Oakland Athletics organization drafted him in the 24th round of that year’s amateur draft. His professional career began with the Vancouver Canadians Class-A team, where he had 11 starts, posted a record of 5-3 with an ERA of 4.12, and had 66 strikeouts.

Dan climbed the ladder through the Minor Leagues, and the Athletics eventually called him up to the “Big Leagues” on August 2, 2013. In part of two seasons playing for the Athletics MLB team, Dan had 27 starts, compiled a 10-8 record, posted a 3.96 ERA, and had 124 strikeouts. In July 2014, the Oakland Athletics traded Dan to the Chicago Cubs. Between 2014 and 2017, several clubs traded for Dan. On January 19, 2017, the Miami Marlins acquired Dan in a trade, where he has been pitching ever since.

Since joining the Marlins, Dan has achieved a new personal best, recording 170 strikeouts in 181.2 innings pitched. During his 7-year MLB career, Dan has a 37-30 record and a 4.25 ERA, and he has pitched 633.1 innings and recorded 549 strikeouts.
